Thank you all for flagging spam posts so quickly! I wonder if the sudden traffic has anything to do with a reply I sent out about an hour ago to a tweet about WP's failure on the accessibility front...
I increased the setting min trust to post links from new user to basic user. Hopefully that will help.
And min first post typing time changed from 3 sec to 10 sec...
