Did you know that the current plone.org had previous site update in 2022?
Back then it was an impressive undertaking, moving from Plone 5 to Plone 6 and Volto, having a bunch of custom built blocks, custom content types, custom theme and full content migration, with news items dating back to 2001. In addition to reworking site structure and rewriting and redoing major landing sites.
Well, now almost four years later it is time to do it again ![]()
During the Stellenbosch Strategic Sprint back in January, it was stated that renewing plone.org is an important strategic step that we should take, hopefully sooner than later.
After some initial discussions during the sprint on what, how, when and who, a group of Plone Marketing and Communications team members and some volunteers sat down. We did a small exercise to answer those questions, then did some copywriting, theme designs and technical discussions on the possibilities and volunteers available.
Now we know this:
- There is a will to renew plone.org by June 15, 2026 and people to work on it
- We should have a Plone 6 site with Volto Light Theme and lightly customized theme, heavily reusing existing blocks
- We will have similar site setup than ploneconf site with all the latest bells and whistles
- The site should be relatively easy to keep updated in the upcoming years
- We will have clear process for updating the contents and theme/features of the site
- We can manually redo main landing pages, no need to migrate every custom block
- There is a will to still keep everything, so migration is possible later, even if we redo the most important langing pages from scratch
The goal - June 15 - is pretty ambitious, but we have to start somewhere.
By World Plone Day 2026, we will record a discussion about the site renewal and hope to be able the show and tell more about it and how you can participate in the endeavor, if you want.
There are bunch of Plone sprints by the end of June, they offer good opportunities to work on this in addition to collaborating online.
Stay tuned.
