Open source project challenges, and Plone's superpowers

This article was shared with me. I read it with empathy and some sadness for Debian's challenges. I don't think their solution is great.

But mostly what it made me realize is how we (Plone) have somehow stumbled on a way of staying connected and working together that has given us decades of longevity.

Two thoughts in particular come to mind:

  • We often meet in person, at sprints and at our annual conference. It is when we are physically present that we see how much higher bandwidth communication really can be. Even if we can do with online video meetings periodically, they are no substitute.
  • Our steering circle meetings, wrangled by our esteemed @esteele, are another Plone superpower: they are monthly meetings of all Plone team leads (though of course open for any to join and listen in on), to ensure coordination and communication between all the "moving parts" of our community. Countless times we have seen an issue brought up by one team be revealed to affect another team, resulting in cross-team collaboration and assistance.

If you're interested in joining the steering circle meetings to listen in and feel the vibe :), we hold them monthly on the first Thursday in the Discord "Meeting Room" at 9 am US Central, though please keep in mind the meeting is for discussion by Plone team leads.
