About the continued relevance of a CMS in an AI world, from the creator of Drupal
"As production gets cheaper, control becomes more important, not less."
Nice article, thank you @tkimnguyen
Relevant take, exactly matching my personal opinion on the relevance of CMS in the age of AI.
But having an opinion is easy, like the one cited from the startup people perspective mentioned in the opener, that estimates AI will kill CMS.
The (Plone!) CMS ist the system, that takes your relevant content into the future. We have 100% proof that Plone is a top player in the field of long term secure data preservation including migrations.
AI is an actor, a method to deal with actions and results. But it is not persistent.
Your intelligence is not your memory. Without memory nothing stays relevant, without display nothing gets resonance. A headless CMS is irrelevant without an interaction interface that is in active use.
There are these 3 actors in that Trinity:
- Storage + Business logic + API (the backend, our Z Object Publishing Environment and his successors)
- CMS UI and MCP like Approaches (the workers, our great editor usability)
- Presentation (the human consumers, and to some point AI scrapers)
The later shows up as a website.
- A CMS is not how a website looks and feels.
- A CMS is how content comes to life and how THIS works, and works, and works.
Always at the state of the art. Trustable. With a community that takes care. Open to new approaches (including transparency how this is achieved). This is fun. Sure and secure.
I tend to add my perspective on this for decades. This is why I came back to use Plone.
If you have no place to manage the results of using AI and no place to manage the results as foundation for the next run, yiu may loose the purpose of culture. Caring for knowledge is the foundation of all intellectual development. A brain with no memory and no evolution has no value, has no future.
And it is the companion article AI and the great digital agency unbundling by Dries Buytaert that puts the wrench at the point where the big users of Plone, the digital agencies (the Com Departments inside of organisations are agencies too!) are changing.
An agent is someone doing something on behalf of another and is not instructed in detail but only by purpose.
As someone running a company in the context of classic public relation agencies and com depts in large foundations, ngo involved in so called relevant projects like circular economy and education, I introduced automated digital driven workflows heavily since the 1990ties based on digital experience starting from the 1970ties. This is why and how I came to Plone and Python.
Unbundling -> Rebundling = Transformation
Deindustrialisation -> Reindustrialisation = Transformation
Need to update my projection of that vision soon for others.
@tkimnguyen thanks for sharing.
