Remove the default portlet assignments using GenericSetup

Somewhat related to the portlet discussion on removing all portlets from a certin type on the site, but I didn't get any feedback on my own post, so I'll try to plug it here. Is there any interest in the community to limit the contents of the portlet dropdownmenu based on roles without resorting to genericsetup portlets.xml ?

Hide portlet types in the add portlet dropdown

Last week in a customer meeting I got the request if we could disable portlets in the dropdown menu on the manage portlets screen because there were too many and users get confused. 'normal' site editors might only need 3 or 4 portlet types and don't need to assign login, search, calendar, news item etc. portlets, depending on the sites they manage.
