Register Dexterity field only upon add-on installation

Inside my xmldirector.plonecore package I register various Dexterity fields using

xml-director/xmldirector.plonecore/blob/master/xmldirector/plonecore/dx/configure.zcml

These fields are available within a stock Plone installation without the package being installed.

What is the correct way for making these fields only available after installation of the xmldirector.plonecore
package? Using a browser layer?
